Asda has appointed David Potts, the former Morrisons chief executive, as its group chief executive with immediate effect, it announced on Tuesday morning. Allan Leighton, who has led Asda since returning as executive chairman in November 2024, becomes non-executive group chairman. Asda said the move had been planned.
Potts spent the first part of his career at Tesco, rising to run its Irish, UK and Asian operations. He then ran Morrisons for eight years until 2023, a spell that included the chain's takeover by the private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice.
Potts said Asda had made good progress but that significant opportunities remained. He said providing value to families had always been central to Asda, and that he would focus on improving the shopping trip every week. The company employs 116,296 people.
